Below are the nonprofits currently looking for volunteers:
Meals on Wheels of Ridgefield -This is a great volunteer opportunity for high school students. Volunteer opportunities for students are limited to the summer vacation period and weekdays during the school year when school is not in session. Essentially all volunteer activities are confined to the days and times our kitchen is in operation: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 am to 12 noon.
One possibility would be in the packaging area where all the meal items each client is to recieve are brought together and packaged for delivery. Substitutes for positions in the kitchen preparing food and later delivering meals have been filled by mother-daughter teams from the National Charity League chapters for a number of years.
Other than packaging the only area that comes to mind is the need to weed and prune limited outside areas where we have foundation plantings several times during the spring and summer. This of course could be done when the kitchen is closed. All other outside upkeep is the responsibility of the Ridgefield Housing Authority.

Conservation Commision-project for volunteers: -The Ridgefield Conservation Commission is a town commison charged, among other things, with looking after the town's 2500 acres of opens space.
The project that we need help with is clearing away invasive plants. Invasive plants are the ones that cover over the natural vegetation. They result in damage to the envioronment by elimninating the variety of plants and trees that are relied on by birds, insects, and animals, thus affecting the natural envioronment. Specifically, we are targeting autumn olive, a tree that was introduced to the country by the US Department of Transportation to control bank erosion. The properties that make it good for erosion control (hardiness, rapid growth, and easy spreading) have resulted in its taking over open fields and meadows.
The project will be to help our summer employees clear several areas of these trees. The espected time would be five or six days probably scheduled over several weeks. The number of volunteers could be four to six persons.

The Friendly Shopper program, which is organized through the Ridgefield Department of Social Services, matches volunteers with local senior citizens who need a companion to take them shopping. Ridgefield Friendly Shopper Program: -The Friendly Shopper program, which is organized through the Ridgefield Department of Social Services, matches volunteers with local senior citizens who need a companion to take them shopping. Volunteers are needed to escort seniors to do their shopping, hair appointment and doctor visits. Each Friendly Shopper is considered a volunteer employee of the Town of Ridgefield and is covered under the Town’s liability insurance. The emphasis is on “friendly”. Friendly Shopper volunteers provide much needed friendship and socialization to individuals who would otherwise be homebound or isolated. We ask the volunteer to commit to one year, one hour a week. Some have been quite generous with their time and have developed real friendships with the recipients.Contact:Carole Konner, Director of Social Services(203) 431-2777socialservices@ridgefieldct.orgRidgefield Discovery Center:
